New Year’s Eve Sparkling Options
What should we bring for New Year’s Eve? It’s a tough call. In my experience, it is difficult, if not impossible, to find a champagne or methode champenoise wine well under $30 that is suitable for ringing new. There are some standby options nearby, but what if your budget is tighter? Fortunately, there are a variety of sparkling wines that can impress and suit the budget.
As an introduction, it is important to recognize why champagne is so expensive. Only champagne from the Champagne region of France can be called champagne. Everything else is sparkling wine, even if it’s made in the same way as champagne. These “methode champenoise” wines can be everything Champagne is, and they can be cheaper. That said, many American luxury sparklers can be just as, if not more, expensive than French ones.
Another reason champagne has historically been more expensive than other wines is due to double fermentation. The champagne goes through a second fermentation in the bottle, which ensures the bubbles. Once every three days or so, the puzzler rotates the champagne bottles, then upside down, so that the sediment collects on the top of the bottle rather than the sides or bottom. After fermentation is complete, the sediment plug is removed and the bottle is sealed for sale. Without a puzzle, the resulting champagne looks cloudy from all the sediment left in the bottle. No wonder the Riddler went crazy. Today, puzzles are solved by machines.
One of my favorite champagne substitutes is Cava. Cava is a Spanish methode champanoise champagne. It varies greatly in quality and price, so be sure to try it before offering it to a party. The price of cava increases with the degree of dryness, extra brut is usually the most expensive. Although “expensive” is relative here. It’s hard to find a cava that costs more than $20. Shop a selection and choose your favorite. There are many levels of sweetness and color. It’s nice to drink at a party and offers a surprisingly complex flavor. A slightly sweeter flavor profile is good for this wine.
We are now moving north to Italy. The classic Italian aperitif is prosecco. Prosecco can be much cheaper than champagne because its secondary fermentation takes place in tanks rather than bottles. As a result, it stops bubbling in the glass much faster than champagne-style champagne. It has a lively, light, fruity foretaste (even the driest examples), and does not offer much in terms of secondary aroma. However, they are delicious and usually low in alcohol, making them perfect for early evening toasts and New Year’s brunch.
Vouvray comes from the Loire Valley region of France. Champagne vouvray will cost more than cava and prosecco, but probably won’t be as expensive as champagne. These wines have a very full flavor and are suitable for aging. Acidity is the hallmark of this wine, and the drier the example, the more obvious it is. These are best paired with food. Consider a voucher for the evening appetizers section, as they can handle even hearty meals.
The key to finding delicious, affordable champagne-style wines made in the United States is to seek out producers in other California regions (read: not Napa), such as Alexander or Sonoma Valley. That said, you may find that a good bottle costs upwards of $20. Brut NV (non-vintage) offers the best value for money, if not the full flavor complex of the vintage.
There are many other alternative sparkling wines to try, such as Brachetto (a very interesting red champagne) or some of the new red methode champenoise wines from Australia. The classic Aussie shiraz is made into sparklers that offer a wonderful blackberry flavor. Lambrusco is a tank-fermented Italian sparkling red wine that I prefer to avoid. If someone found something to recommend, write a comment.
There are so many different things you can do for the New Year – without spending a fortune on a single bottle. Taste first, keep chilled and enjoy. Happy New Year!
