Indispensable Firefox Extensions for Bloggers

If you’re a blogger, niche or affiliate marketer, Firefox can save you time and make you money. There are free plugins available that you can quickly install so you can do all the things you’d normally need custom software to do.

First of all – if you blog or have your own website, you should already be using the Firefox web browser. If not, download and install it now and make it your default browser. It’s free, open source, and the same extensions are available to everyone, whether you’re using Windows, Mac, or Linux.

Then download and install the list of free Firefox extensions and follow my instructions on how to use them below. I will provide two lists of plugins, one “required” and the second “optional”, depending on your needs and the type of web work you do. Please note that “mileage may vary” and the more add-ons you install, the more memory Firefox needs to run. You can install and remove these add-ons at any time in the Firefox browser under “Tools -> Add-ons”. All my working computers have 1-2 GB of RAM. If your older system has less memory, you can choose to run only the essential plugins that work best. Oh, if you work in more than one place or on more than one computer, you can choose to run “Portable Apps” (just Google it) on a memory stick.

All these firefox extensions can be found in the firefox.com repository (just search by name).

Rank checker

Tracking your blog’s search engine rankings usually requires paying for an online service. The other method requires downloading and installing software to track. Finally – the geniuses at SEOBook have finally created a Firefox extension so you can easily do this in your browser. It’s dirt easy and always just a click away in the status bar. Just enter a URL and a few keywords and you’ll be checking Google, Yahoo and MSN Live searches in no time. You can save all the preconfigured searches you want and even schedule them! Thank you SEOBook, this tool is a dream for bloggers and niche marketers to quickly and automatically check your SERP rankings on a regular basis.

SEOQuake

SEOQuake is the ultimate SEO browser add-on. It’s very configurable and has a million options, but in a nutshell, it’s the best tool for getting website statistics and information. By default, when installed, an “SEOBar” will appear on your web pages when you browse the web. It’s fixed at the top of the page (which annoys me), mine is set to ‘float’ so I can move it around the page. You can also open and close it.

Which stats are displayed on the toolbar is completely configurable in the add-on options, this example is the default settings. In this example, the options are: Google pagerank, number of indexed pages in google, number of backlinks listed in Yahoo, link density in Yahoo, indexed pages in MSN live search, Alexa rank, domain age , links in del .icio.us, link to whois, link to source code view, link to custom link density report, number of internal links, and number of external links. That’s a crazy amount of information in one place, and it’s very, very useful even if you don’t do a lot of “SEO” work. Very handy, I think every blogger should install this. If you’re an affiliate or niche professional and you’re new to the power of this plugin, you’ll never be without it again. There is another option for “SEOToolbar” which is fixed at the top of the browser (with the same statistics) as the Google Toolbar. It’s better to have the floating one on the page.

But wait “there’s more”! SEOQuake also improves Google search results! The first change to Google SERP is the “save to file” or “attach to file” button at the top of the page. That’s right – you can search Google for keywords and save your SEO data to a CSV file so you can import it into a spreadsheet for analysis. Although this can only be used by advanced users, SEOQuake’s statistics are displayed below each search result. You can instantly get pagerank, Alexa ranking, backlinks, indexed pages and other data of all the pages ranked in the top positions of Google! SEO Quake is the only plugin that doesn’t give up! Once you use it, you can become addicted to looking at other people’s statistics!

del.icio.us bookmarks

del.icio.us firefox extension is very simple but time saving. del.icio.us was the first popular online social bookmarking web application. It was also one of the first to use (many consider it the innovator) “tagging” to classify saved bookmarks. I honestly don’t know a single blogger who doesn’t use this service (which is free and now owned by Yahoo!). Once you have installed this plugin, you will get 2 things. One is that pressing “Ctl-D” on your keyboard will bring up a popup dialog, just add the tags and it will save to del.icio.us. Second, if you press “Ctl-B” the sidebar will appear and you can instantly search and find your bookmarks. This extension makes del.icis.us 100 times more usable.

Google Notebook

Before Google Notebook, I was a disorganized mess. I kept all my blog and website ideas and “to do” lists on post-it notes and scraps of paper. That and lots and lots of text files. After installing the plugin, everything changes. Create an online “notebook” that you can use for notes, research, and work in progress. You can work on a full web page or in a small box in the lower right corner of the browser by clicking the “open notebook” button on the status bar. You can set up separate sections, pages and headings and organize them in different ways. You can drag and drop, copy and delete – but probably the biggest feature is that you can read a web page, select some text (or image or whatever), right-click on it and choose “Send to”. notebook” and BAM! you’ve saved it for later use. This completely eliminates having to keep dozens of Firefox tabs open for days and taking notes all over the place. Because it’s web-based and part of your Google account, you can access your notebook from any computer, anywhere, anytime. What’s more, you can save finished documents or work-in-progress you can also send work to Google Docs at any time.

Oh, I almost forgot the best feature! Do you work or collaborate with others online? You can “share” a notebook with anyone (who has a Google account) and collaborate with them. This is SO GREAT if you work in an online team in web design, niche marketing, mentoring, consulting, or blogging!

He stumbles upon it

StumbleUpon is a web-based social media service that allows you to “discover” websites you like. After you put some keywords in your profile, when you click “stumble” all you’ll see is a random site in your favorite index. Then vote it up or down. In addition to tipping, you can also use the toolbar to vote for sites as you browse the web, and if you’re the first to find a site, you can add a short written description and keywords to “tag” it into the appropriate categories. So you should have the toolbox to vote on pages, stumble, but also use it to interact with other stumbleupon members and “friends”. Once you’ve found some “friends” in your profile, you can use the SU toolbar to “send” them pages they might like. If you can’t see the handwriting on the wall – most bloggers use StumbleUpon for marketing. It’s a way to connect with other bloggers, and many have no problem asking you to “stumble upon” their post or page. You can trade stumbles or reviews, SU is a great way to not only build a community but also gain traffic.

Details on 7 optional (but handy) Firefox extensions for bloggers

Firefly: If you write code, you’re probably already familiar with Firebug. This is a basic firefox plugin that provides explicit error messages to help you debug javascript, HTML, and more. You can even see incoming headers.

Web developer: The Web Developer extension is the same, for those who write HTML and CSS and need to debug layouts. This plugin is great for solving layout issues like tables and divs.

iMacros: iMacros is a nifty extension that lets you automate almost anything in the browser, from filling out forms to downloading to testing apps and more. However, this is more for advanced users, coders, web developers or bloggers who have some technical knowledge.

Firefox Companion for eBay: If you are a niche marketer or someone with BANS sites or if you do eBay related marketing at all – firefox companion for eBay is for you. You can do all of your eBay searches and research in the sidebar without having to open multiple eBay pages to get the information you want and quickly do your product research.

ScribeFire: Scribefire is a plugin that uses the XML-RPC protocol to connect to your blog and allows you to write posts directly in your browser without going to the admin page or the browser. It used to be called “Performing for Firefox”. It is very popular because it works with WordPress, Blogger, Windows Live Spaces, Blogspot, Drupal and many other blogging platforms (anything that uses the XML-RPC specification). You can take notes, write drafts, publish quickly – it makes blogging more fun and easier for many people. Many people report that they blog much more after installation.

FireShot: Fireshot creates screenshots for you right in your browser with just a click of a button. No more opening Photoshop, Fireworks, or Paint Shop Pro. Unlike other screenshot-only plugins, Fireshot has graphics editing tools and allows you to insert text and annotate images. You can choose to capture the entire webpage or just a part of it, and it even helps you upload the image to your website or email it to someone. If you take a lot of screenshots while blogging, fireshot is for you.

ColorZilla: If you do a lot of web design or CSS work, you’ll find yourself constantly searching for the right colors. ColorZilla gives you a little eyedropper to get the color of anything—anytime, without having to visit a web-based color chart, color generator, or fire up Dreamweaver. It gets both hex and HTML color codes and has a built-in palette browser. It has DOM spy features, which essentially means you can quickly get information about the color of any element on a web page. If you deal with color on your sites, this is also a great plugin.

Which Firefox Plugins Work Best As Blogger?

This is a subjective list, and you may use different Firefox extensions that you find invaluable. Hopefully there were at least one or two that will make you a more productive blogger!
