Turks and Caicos Travel – Essential Information for This Caribbean Xanadu

Warm, white beaches; warm, clear water in dozens of shades of turquoise; and gentle breezes characterize the paradise Turks and Caicos Islands. With direct flights from many US cities, this Caribbean gem promises the vacation of a lifetime.

If you’re traveling to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the coming months, be sure to take advantage of these insider tips, travel guidelines and other essential information when visiting Heaven on Earth.

Airports and airlines

The Turks and Caicos Islands have three international airports in Grand Turk, Providenciales and South Caicos. Providenciales International Airport is the most popular and receives the most international flights and visitors.

There are several airline options to choose from, including American Airlines, Bahamas Air, British Airways, Delta Airlines, Spirit Air, and US Airways. All operate flights to and from the islands. However, in order to travel from Turks and Caicos to other Caribbean destinations, you must first lay down in Florida – most commonly in Miami.

Customs and Immigration

All American visitors to the islands must carry a valid passport. If you are from Canada, an original or notarized copy of your birth certificate and a photo ID are sufficient for entry. You can extend your visit to 30 days with a one-time renewal. All visitors to the island must present a return ticket.

Most visitors, including those from the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom, do not need a visa, but some other international visitors must obtain a visa. Be sure to double-check your country’s requirements and allow enough time to obtain the required documents.

For specific questions regarding immigration and visit policies, please contact the Turks and Caicos Department of Immigration directly at (649) 946-4233 or by fax at (649) 941-5696.

Turks and Caicos Customs allows typical tourist items such as cameras, sports equipment such as fishing rods, golf clubs and tennis rackets, and even certain types of food. Pornography and controlled drugs are illegal, and visitors may only bring firearms with the written permission of the Chief of Police.

Accommodations

All of the islands’ resorts and hotels welcome you with open arms, and some charge an arm and a leg for their world-class amenities. The islands offer a wide range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.

One excellent resource for researching different hotels and resorts is TripAdvisor. Guests provide feedback on their experiences and give accommodations a star rating. TripAdvisor also offers Bed-and-Breakfasts reviews.

Climate

The average year-round temperature in Turks and Caicos is 77 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. The average annual rainfall for the islands is only 21 inches.

For mostly sunny climates, be sure to bring extra sunscreen, a hat, and a long-sleeved shirt or two for extra sunscreen.

Pack mostly casual clothes. The dress code on the islands is decidedly casual, although tight shoes and a collared shirt are required in some of the fancier restaurants. Foodies should bring a decent set of clothes just in case. Swimwear worn away from the beach or pool is generally frowned upon.

Money

The official currency of the islands is the US dollar, and the islands do not limit the amount of money you can bring to the island.

Traveler’s checks are accepted on the island, although some businesses may charge a 5% transaction fee for traveler’s checks.

Credit cards are generally accepted

At tourist attractions such as Providenciales and Grand Turk, you will have no problem using a credit card. Remember to alert your credit card company about international transactions to avoid having your card “frozen”, and if you plan to visit some of the less-visited islands, keep cash.

A 15% tip is customary in restaurants, as in the USA. However, don’t be surprised if some restaurants include a 10% service charge on the bill. Tipping personal services and taxis is also a commonly accepted practice.

Pets

Proof of rabies vaccination is required for all pets brought to the island. Be prepared to have your pet inspected by a public health inspector upon arrival. Double check with the hotel to see if the hotel and staff are pet friendly.

Although planning an international trip is always challenging, the 12 miles of Grace Bay Beach offer ample rewards for Turks and Caicos travel. The hardest part will be leaving.
