Google Places – 10 Tips On Optimising Your Google Places Business Listing

Claiming Google Location data is essential, regardless of whether you run an online or offline business.

Google Places, formerly known as Google Maps, is a fantastic way to maintain your online presence, especially if you’re a simple business without a website. You can provide valuable and specific information to potential customers who are more than likely looking for a local service about your exact location, opening hours, photos, videos, services and customer reviews. It also allows you to offer additional incentives for customers to use your business in the form of coupons.

The process of applying for a Google Places listing is very simple. Simply open a Google account and once you’ve done that and signed in, go to Business Solutions. You’ll see a link to Google Places in the “Get new customers” section. By clicking on the link, you will be taken to the section where you can request your company’s data.

Many businesses have applied for a Google Places listing but haven’t fully utilized it and as a result will have little value. It is not enough to enter the name, address, phone number and select a business category.

Many local searches on Google now display the first page of results, which includes a Google Map and a list of up to 7 businesses that Google says match your search query. So for example, if a potential customer searches for “Plumber in Manchester”, Google will return results such as a list of 7 local plumbers and a map of Manchester and the surrounding area with markers showing the exact location of each of the 7 businesses.

As a plumber in Manchester, ideally you would like to appear on one of these 7 business listings. To give yourself the best chance of doing this, you need to take full advantage of Google Places data and provide as much information as possible. If you don’t optimize your listing properly, you won’t appear in Google Places.

Here are 10 tips to optimize your Google Places listing:

1) Enter the name of your company (it may be helpful to include the geographic area you are targeting – eg XYZ Plumbing Ltd | Manchester).

2) Enter your company’s full address details, including postcode (if you work from home, you can choose not to keep your address private).

3) Add your main phone number and additional fax and mobile numbers if you have them.

4) Enter your website details (check the box if you don’t have one) and your email address.

5) You now have 200 characters to describe your business. It is very important to include keywords in your description that will help potential customers search for your business type and location.

6) In the next section, you must enter the categories to which your business belongs. This is one area where many businesses fail when applying for a Google Places listing. Initially, there is one category field and you can see cases where businesses fill in that single category field and move on, when in fact there are 5 category fields. You must place your business in a category that matches Google’s suggestions as you enter your details. For example, when you start typing “plumber,” Google suggests “plumber” and “plumbing tradesman.” You can then click ‘add category’ 4 more times and enter your own category keywords based on what people are using to search for your business including location eg ‘Plumbers Manchester’, ‘Heating Engineer Manchester’ etc.

7) Choose if your business provides services such as home delivery or home repair in a certain area. Here you can choose to hide your address if you wish, and you can choose to specify the area your business serves by distance or the actual areas covered using place names or zip codes.

8) Enter your opening hours.

9) List all payment options available to customers.

10) Add a business/product image (up to 10 as you can), video (up to 5) and additional details about your business such as parking, guarantees, refund policy, etc.

As you add data to the data, the right side of the page will display the percentages of all you have done so far. The goal is to complete each stage and achieve a 100% completion score.

Google has the following help pages to help you get going – “Create a Great Listing”, “Tips to Help Users Find Your Business” and “Business Listing Quality Guidelines”.

To further improve your listing and maximize your chances of appearing on Google Maps and the 7 business listings on page 1 of Google for your search terms, you can add coupons and ask for reviews. There is a separate coupon page on the “View report” page. Creating online coupons encourages people to visit your website or contact your business. Invite customers to write reviews about your service through their own Google Accounts. If you get more reviews than your competitors, you have a chance to rank much better.

When you have finished filling out your profile, Google requires you to verify your profile. You can do this by making a phone call, sending an SMS to your mobile phone or sending a postcard to your business address. Checking by phone or SMS is much faster and easier. You will receive a PIN code that you simply enter on the Google Places page.

You can see what the listing looks like to potential customers by logging into your account and clicking “View Listing on Google Maps.”

Google also offers a new “View Report” dashboard that provides important feedback on captured impressions (how many times users saw your business listing as a local search result) and actions (how many times users showed interest in your business listing). for your ad. This is very useful information that can be used in the search engine optimization of the listing and website, if any.

If your business isn’t listed, there’s no better time than now. Local business online search is only going to grow in importance, and the sooner you grab your position, the better. You can attract targeted, free traffic to your business.
