Runtime Error 482 (Printform Error) Windows 10 – 5 Steps To Resolve Windows 10 Printer Code 482

Runtime error 482 is caused by the inability to connect to the “Printform” Windows library from applications that still use the VBA (Visual Basic) integration engine.

Although the error appears in Windows 10, it usually occurs when using Adobe Acrobat or another “Print to PDF” application.

The solution to runtime error 482 is to first make sure the correct printer is installed (in most cases it isn’t), then if the error persists, change/remove any references to the printer setting in any VBA application.

If you see the error message when you try to “Print to PDF”, check that you have the correct PDF drivers installed and that the application you are using is compatible with Windows 10.

The steps outlined in this tutorial explain how to repair…

OK

The problem with Runtime Error 428 stems from the way Windows works with the underlying hardware.

When you use Windows, there are many “subsystems” that allow your system to connect to many peripherals and other devices. These subsystems are called “drivers” and require other software to connect.

The problem with this error is that the hardware trying to connect to the system does not respond, similar to error 428. Although the error was quite common (and still is on Windows 10) – most people are unaware of the cause of the problem and that it is actually caused by the Visual Basic runtime – a series of different files/applications were designed. to connect applications and deeper Windows processes.

Visual Basic is now ancient technology – but is still used by the likes of Excel and many third-party applications (including Citrix and Adobe Acrobat) to provide embedded functionality to the system. It is this integration that is damaged and corrupted on your computer (resulting in the appearance of the error). When you try to use “printer” on your system, the problem is that the application you’re using will basically be using an outdated or corrupted version of the VBA Printform engine, leading to the error.

The fix is to make sure the printer is installed correctly – and working properly – and that there are no underlying problems with the system.

Solution

While Microsoft recommends using the SFC (System File Checker) and DISM (Deployment Image Services and Management) tools to fix problems with the system itself, the problem can be much more acute/simple than that.

We’ve found that VBA is often the problem, and to fix the problem we update the application in question – either the underlying application or the various VC++ redistributables.

Here’s how to…

1. Reinstall the printer

The first step is to reinstall the printer on the system.

This may sound drastic, but it’s actually a very good way to solve most “printer” errors – typically because printer drivers can sometimes become corrupted or damaged.

To do this, you need to perform the following steps:

  • Right click on the “Start” button (lower left screen)

  • Select “Device Manager”.

  • Scroll down to the “Printers” section

  • Right-click the printers causing the problem

  • Select “Remove”.

  • Follow the on-screen steps

  • Restart your computer

After restarting, Windows 10 should start adding the printer automatically again.

To check this, you can use the following steps:

  • Left click on the “Start” button (bottom left of the screen)

  • From the “spells” menu on the left select “gear” (this is for the “settings” applet)

  • Click on “Tools” (top row)

  • Select “Printers and Scanners” from the left menu.

  • If the printer does not appear, select “Add a printer or scanner”.

  • Follow the on-screen steps

Allow this process to occur and then try printing with it again. If the error persists or the printer is not listed, continue to the next step.

2. Delete the Printer Spooler

The next problem may be that the “print queue manager” is causing problems.

A print queue manager is basically a queue through which Windows can handle various print jobs. Anyone familiar with Windows 95/98 will probably remember the joy of having to deal with a constantly corrupt print queue manager.

To solve one of the most common causes of Runtime error 482, delete the print queue manager:

  • Press “Windows” + “S” keys on your keyboard
  • Type “CMD” in the search box, right-click and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Type net stop spooler and press Enter
  • Type (note the spaces): DEL /F /S /Q %systemroot%System32spoolPRINTERS and press Enter
  • Type net start spooler and press Enter

This will restart the queue manager after deleting any underlying queues/pools that may exist in the system.

3. Reinstall the Affected Software

Many people have reported the error while using Adobe Acrobat as well as many other tools.

You will need to re-install all affected software as updates may be available and compatibility or similar issues may arise.

Doing this (if you don’t already know) is relatively easy:

  • Right-click on the “Start” button (lower left corner of the taskbar)
  • Select “Applications and features”.
  • Select the app causing the errors from the list
  • Select “Remove”.
  • Let the process continue
  • Restart your computer
  • Reinstall the software (preferably download the latest version from the Internet)

If you’re an experienced computer user, you’ve probably already tried this. If not, you should at least make sure the app causing the error is running as up-to-date as possible.

4. Install.NET & VC++ again

If the above doesn’t work, it *might* be that some of Windows’ core dependencies (the software libraries it uses to run) are damaged, corrupted, or out of date.

There are two systems that work best here: .NET or Visual C++ (VC++). Reinstalling both allows you to ensure that the system is able to use the files/settings required to function correctly…

  • Press “Windows” + “S” keys on your keyboard
  • In the “Search” field, type “Control Panel”.
  • Scroll to the “Programs and Features” section
  • Look for the “Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable” list
  • From the list, note the “year” number of the installed versions (for example, “2012”) and the “architecture” version (x86 / x64)
  • Right-click on each and select “Remove”.

Once you’ve uninstalled them all (don’t worry, it won’t harm your system, although it will probably stop many apps from working until they’re reinstalled), find your desired search engine and type “vc++ download”.

The first result should bring up a page for Microsoft showing “latest supported Visual C++ downloads” – this will show you the full list of the libraries you just removed.

You need to download each one from the list and install it again.

Once that’s done, click “Turn Windows features on or off” in the left panel.

There should be several “.NET” listings at the top. Click on version 4.7 and verify that it is installed correctly. If not, we need to reinstall:

  • Go to the search engine of your choice
  • Type “.NET Download”.
  • You will then see a “.NET Downloads” page from Microsoft
  • Click it and then download the latest version of the .NET Framework
  • Save it to your hard drive and install it on your system

This ensures that any application that touches VBA has access to the correct files, etc.

5. Run SFC/DISM

Finally, you should look at running the SFC/DISM tools.

These do not directly fix the error, but they ensure that the system runs as smoothly as possible…

  • Press “Windows” + “S” keys on your keyboard
  • Type “CMD” and right-click + select “Run as administrator” in the app that appears
  • When CMD loads, type “SFC /scannow” and press Enter
  • Let the system run (it shouldn’t take too long) and it will automatically fix any problems it finds
  • Then type “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” and press “Enter”.
  • This takes a lot longer than SFC, but should fix most problems within Windows

If the error persists after this, it indicates a more specific problem with your computer. It could be anything from your antivirus to a specific setting that is causing the problems – the next step is to either get a technician’s opinion OR get some insight from the makers of the software that is causing the problem. In both cases, there is an underlying problem that leads to the appearance of the error.
