A History of Your Office Phone

The office phone is an underrated tool that business owners and employees probably don’t give much thought to. Thanks to the development of cloud computing and increased access to communication tools, we use the office phone every day without thinking much about how it has become an integral part of our business communication.

To better understand this, let’s start at the beginning.

Humans have been communicating since the dawn of time; either through sounds or images. If you know the history of telephones, you know that it was Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone in 1876 and successfully made the first two-way transmission of clear speech, but the way office phones work and look has seen its highs and lows.

In the years after Bell’s invention, telephone exchanges were used to connect two parties so that they could communicate with each other. Telephone lines connected individuals in Massachusetts as early as 1877, and making a phone call involved the use of a switchboard that required an operator to manually connect two callers using a panel of sockets and wires. In the beginning, people used wooden and hand-cranked telephones; then Bell made some much-needed improvements to the telephone and introduced the candlestick telephone, which can be thought of as an office telephone that sits upright on a desk.

In 1878, two years after the telephone exchange was invented, the first commercial North American telephone exchange opened in Connecticut. Although the first telephone exchange in North America was designed and built by George W. Coy, it was actually Thomas Edison and Tivadar Puskás who came up with the idea for the telephone exchange, which was then built by the Bell Telephone Company in 1877 and inspired future designs.

With this new communication technology, the size of the country’s switchboards came under control, and they eventually had to be separated so that multiple operators could manage the switchboards. As a result, in the 1920s, they switched to a panel machine switching system, which was an early type of automatic telephone switchboard and did not require multiple switchboards. Almon Strowger furthered the development of communications and the office telephone in 1892 with the invention of the rotary dial telephone, which was advertised as “one of the answers to the modern cry for greater efficiency”. The first installation was in 1892 and it shared the telephone market with the candlestick until the 1930s. The rotary dial telephone was a popular choice for home and office telephones until the 1960s.

In 1951, New Jersey introduced the first direct-dial long-distance service, which allowed a caller to call any other user outside the local calling area without operator assistance. At that time, only 11 cities were able to dial with an area code and seven digits. Modems began to be used in 1958 to connect over a direct telephone line, which was used to transmit and decode digital data. The introduction of modems eventually led to the introduction of echo cancellation, broadband, radio and the beloved Wi-Fi.

During the development of mobile phone electronics in the 1960s, push-button phones replaced rotary dial phones. The office telephone was now easier to use, and as answering machine technology became more popular, people’s communication behavior also changed.

Early versions of VoIP were explored in the 1970s to improve circuit redundancy and network availability in the event of infrastructure failure, as circuit-switched networks were more vulnerable to failures. Regardless of this vision, the circuit-switched network remains at the heart of infrastructures. Over the next two decades, advances were made that led to the creation of the Asterisk Private Branch Exchange and what we know today as the modern office telephone system.

Today’s office phone systems

There is no doubt that office phone systems have undergone tremendous changes over the decades. Although the way we communicate has evolved to meet growing needs, our need to communicate with each other will never disappear.

POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), also known as analog, was the basic service offered by telephone companies from 1876 until 1988, when Bell invented the telephone. Today, there are many options for office phone systems, including hosted PBX, IP. PBX and mobile solutions.

Today’s office phone systems are much more convenient and can even centralize business communications without much technical experience. If your office phone systems don’t allow you to stay in touch with the people most important to your business’ success (i.e. customers, employees and partners), how can you expect your business to grow? If you’re looking for a robust and easy-to-use office phone system for your small business, you can rest assured that there are practical choices for business communication and components to meet your unique needs and requirements.
