My story and Electrical Hypersensitivity
In 1993, at the age of 37, I was diagnosed with a mild heart condition called HCM hypertrophic cardiomyopathy…simply put…a thickened septum in one of the chambers of my heart, reducing blood flow and capacity. This condition is successfully controlled by beta blockers, which I will take for the rest of my life.
At the same time as this situation, I developed a condition called AFIB, atrial fibrillation. In fact, my heart would lose its rhythm and race, slow down, add extra beats, and I always knew when that was happening because I would feel my chest. AFIB can be a serious condition because if the condition persists for a long time, blood clots can form and cause a stroke. While I lived in Toronto until 2003, I was closely monitored by an excellent cardiologist at Sunnybrook Medical Center. There were several emergency trips to the hospital, usually around 5:00am when my afib attacks always seemed to come on…but I was always lucky because my heart always seemed to be able to get back into sinus rhythm without needing to. . medical intervention.
In 2003 we moved to Waterloo Ontario and I found what I thought was a good cardiologist as he was from the Ottawa Heart Institute. One of the first things he did was give me an antiarrhythmic drug called Amiodarone. I was on this drug for four years and although I still had afib attacks, they were less frequent.
In the fall of 2006, I decided to return to broadcasting part-time as a reporter/newscaster. Around Christmas I started feeling full, unable to clear my throat, and had symptoms that affected my ability to work in broadcasting. One morning while shaving, I noticed that my throat felt like something the size of a tennis ball was stuck in it. I immediately made an appointment with the cardiologist, and his answer was that there was nothing wrong.
By March 2007, I had lost over twenty-five pounds and couldn’t sleep at night because of an irregular heartbeat in my ears. These attacks scared me as they now lasted for hours. This was something new.
I ended up in the emergency room of a local hospital. Many of the symptoms I experienced resembled a heart attack. But luckily it didn’t happen… I was hyperthyroid… My thyroid was overloaded with iodine, in fact it was so swollen that it was almost impossible to take an x-ray because there was little or no room for the radioactive isotope to be absorbed in the thyroid gland.
My wife said that literally overnight I went from being a basically healthy male adult to looking like a frail old man. Intervention by an endocrinologist saved my life, and by late fall, miraculously, I was almost back to normal and had regained most of the weight I had lost. The miracle of it all is that my thyroid, which I was told was destroyed and I would have to take hormones for the rest of my life, started to function normally again. This whole experience was caused by a rare allergy to Amiodarone.
If my cardiologist had really listened to me and done a proper job on the exam when I saw him in January 2007, I never would have had to go through this life threatening experience. During this whole ordeal, I searched for information on the causes of AFIB. A lot of the info I read said things like caffeine could cause it. So I eliminated all possible triggers. But the afib persisted.
I worked for some large consumer electronics companies from the 1990s to the 2000s and often sat in office environments with bright fluorescent lighting. I would suffer from low energy, headaches, palpitations, shortness of breath and general restlessness. At one company, they removed the fluorescent lights above my desk and I put a small lamp on my desk.
Within a day, the headache and lethargy disappeared. I found this quite interesting. The other thing I was referring to was that when I was working on the old tube computer monitors, I was getting headaches and sore eyes. Upon further investigation, I found that these symptoms only occurred when the monitor’s refresh rate was 60 Hz. By increasing the refresh rate to 72 Hz, the symptoms disappeared.
Did I do something here?… If so… I didn’t really understand what I stumbled into.
During my work in the consumer electronics industry, which began in the early 1990s and lasted until 2009, I never realized that all the technologies I sold, such as cordless phones, cell phones, televisions, radios, all had one thing in common. I only had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Havas once, but that conversation changed my life. Based on Dr. Havas’s study of electrical sensitivity in some people when they were exposed to radio frequencies, I decided to try an experiment in my own home. I disconnected all my cordless phones, reinstalled landlines and turned off wifi. That was an inconvenience…I bet it was. Before I did this, I bought some test equipment because I wanted to see for myself how much radiation was generated in my home, especially when I was in close contact with emitting devices such as a wireless router or cordless phone.
When I got up the next morning and completely turned off these devices, I immediately knew something was different. I felt energized and alert and learned to live without wifi and cordless phones for the next few days as I needed to find out if my afib was caused by exposure to these frequencies. You should also know that I work from home, so these changes have had a huge impact on my health.
As 2012 draws to a close, I can say that I no longer suffer from afib… I can say that my family has accepted the challenge and made changes in our home for a healthier lifestyle. We do not know the long-term effects of exposure to electrosmog. And while many conclusions have been drawn from completed and ongoing studies, we certainly don’t know why, for example, autism is on the rise… many studies link it to exposure to an invisible pollutant when women are pregnant… It has been proven time and time again that cellular damage caused by government it can also occur below a level considered safe.
Yet here in North America, more cell phone towers are being built right in the middle of residential areas.
